MnDOT announces statewide student bicycle art contest winners

Winners receive bike products for their schools ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to School program today announced the winners of its first Bike to School Day poster contest. Six winning entries in two age categories were selected from more than 100 entries statewide. Theme of the contest was for students to show how they felt when they ride a bicycle. Winners of the contest received their choice of bicycle products for their school. Products included a bike rack and public bike pump. In the kindergarten to fourth grade category, Lilian Reiter, fourth grader at Battle Creek Elementary, was the first place winner. Second and third place winners were Lily Sabers, first grader at Ave Marie Academy, Maple Grove, and Grace Terry, third grader at Truman Elementary, Truman. In the fifth to eighth grade category, Finn McEllistrem, fifth grader at Friendly Hills Middle School, Mendota Heights, was the first place winner. Olivia Klassen, eighth grader at Ave Maria Academy, Maple Grove, and Ella Nagorske, fifth grader at Truman Elementary, Truman, were second and third place winners. Winning artwork can be viewed at http://www.mndot.gov/mnsaferoutes/programs/poster_contest.html. Dave Cowan, Safe Routes to School coordinator, said the contest was a good way for students to express how they feel when they ride a bike. “The poster contest review committee was pleased with the creativity exhibited by the students who submitted posters. Some of the themes that arose really highlighted the benefits of why we should encourage more students to get riding,” Cowan said. The Safe Routes to School programs and projects aim to make it safer and easier for students to walk and bicycle to school.
