The Slavic Community Center (SCC)

was created because community members and allies of the Twin Cities Slavic community identified critical needs for social services within the Russian-speaking population. SCC has conducted programs in St. Paul, Shakopee, Bloomington, Minneapolis, Anoka, and Minnetonka.

The Slavic Community Center proposes to implement a broad community-based outreach and education program for parents and youth to begin to address the issues of chemical dependency and mental health within the Russian-speaking community. The goals of this model are to: Educate parents about the signs of drug abuse in teens and young adults; Teach parents how to effectively communicate with their children and youth around the issue of substance abuse; Educate pre-teens, adolescents, young adults and parents about the impact of alcohol and drug use on the developing brain; Train youth and young adults to become peer educators who promote chemical health within their peer groups Inform families about available community resources for chemical dependency treatment, intervention and aftercare support; Shift the cultural norm that currently tolerates alcohol abuse to one of expecting responsible alcohol use; Assist families in navigating the chemical dependency treatment system to access information, treatment services and support; and Initiate dialogue within the Russian-speaking community about holistic family health and wellness that includes chemical and mental health milestones.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
