Bicultural Parenting from A Southeast Asian Parent’s Perspectives

To understand Southeast Asian parenting and chlld-rearing practices, we must first understand the cultural values and beliefs that influence parents, especially regarding family life and interpersonal relationships.

Traditionally, Southeast Asians tend to have a large extended family, usually up to three or four generations living together (Vandeusen et al., 1980). Nuclear families typically have four to eight children, depending on socioeconomic status and ethnic group.

1. Green RX Kick-Off at Logan Park

On June 18, 2016, BALL had a successful kick off for Green RX at Logan Park in Northeast Minneapolis. Green RX is part of the Bi-cultural Active Living Lifestyle that has been that been piloted by the Green RX team. This program has been started to encourage the community to utilize the parks and exercise more. Interested community members we able to register for culturally specific physical activities at the kick-off. The pilot program offers Yoga, Tai Chi, Asian Dance, Hip Hop, and African Drum as examples of cultural physical activities.

With collaborations of the following agencies: MPRB, Asian Media Access, Pathway Learning Center, St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital, Fairview and Park Directors, the Green RX team was able to secure the Leadership Park fund for this pilot program. It took about 6 months to be able to secure the grant and start planning for the kick-off and implementation of Green RX in the parks. AS Green RX starts taking root in the parks, this will assist BALL in encouraging the Northsiders to stay healthy.

2. July 28 5-10pm (Thurs) FLOW at Plymouth

A kick-off for the FLOW weekend at Plymouth Avenue, North Minneapolis.

Once again, this year North Minneapolis FLOW will expand to Plymouth Avenue and highlight the arts and artists around the Penn and Plymouth Corridor. The block party will be hosted right on the Plymouth, between Russell and Sheridan. Asian Media Access will take the lead to host a series of performances and an arts fair. Mark your calendar, bring the lawn chairs, we will rock the block!!!!

3. Health Photo Booth

Continuing on Bicultural Active Living Lifestyle (BALL) Campaign, Asian Media Access and our Youth Media Force team members have been busy to collect feedbacks from Minnesotans about their opinions toward the state-wide healthcare system. AMA has actively assisted in outreaching to Limited English Speaking Communities, to utilized diverse story telling methods and video/radio/photo documenting the feedbacks beyond literature.

4. #tourdenice

Our Multimedia Coordinator, William Harrison, will be competing in the Minneapolis Foundation’s #tourdenice ride for charity. The ride is on Saturday, July 9th and is utilizing the Nice Ride MN public bicycle platform. Riders have 2 hours to check-in to as many Nice Ride stations as possible, starting and ending at Gold Medal Park. For every ride taken on Nice Ride for the entire day of July 9th, $1 will be donated to a pool of up to $5000 and will be split amongst 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. 1st place will take 50% of the pool back to the charity or organization they are riding for, 2nd place gets 30%, with the remaining 20% going to 3rd place. Riding on behalf of Asian Media Access, William is of course pushing for 1st place!

Ride starts at 9am from Gold Medal Park (near the river, by the Guthrie Theater) in Downtown Minneapolis this Saturday, July 9th!
