Tales From the Garden #16

Native American Bicultural Healthy Living
By Maya Park

In the year of 2000 there was an estimated of 4.1 million Native Americans living in the US, which represents less than 1.5 percent of US population and about 500 federal tribes overall. The number of Native Americans living in reservations has decreased over the past few decades. Now there’s only 1 in 5 Native Americans living in those areas. In 1924 congress granted U.S. citizenship to American Indians, but over the following 20 years, Federal services were withdrawn and federal trust protection was removed from tribal land. One policy made…Continue Reading

1. BALL (Bicultural Active Living Lifestyle) Campaign has successfully promoting the Green Prescription throughout the summer 2016

In Collaboration with Minneapolis Park and Rec, the BALL Campaign has been promoting – Green/Park Prescription for people to exercise more, go out to nature, RUN and PLAY.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), US childhood obesity rates have more than tripled in the past thirty years. Because of obesity, Americans for the first time in centuries are projected to have a shorter life expectancy – children are expected to die much younger than their parents. For adults and especially children, being overweight or obese can lead to serious medical conditions, including Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and the list goes on.

What is the solution? The National Park Service has initialized a Nationwide Call for Action with “Green/Park Prescription,” in order to enhance the linkages between communities, public parks and healthcare sectors. “Green/Park Prescriptions” is a concept that connects the healthcare community and public lands to create healthier people.

In response to the nationwide initiative, in Minneapolis we have called all interested parties, to work with BALL to:

• Seek best practices and implement changes for the “Green/Park Prescription,” that will improve and sustain all people’s health;

• Collaborate with all levels to champion for the “Green/Park Prescription Initiative,” especially with Physician/Clinics; and

• Create opportunities and resources that assist health professionals in connecting children/youth with close-to-home opportunities for recreation and fitness through Parks and Community Centers, with a special emphasis on refugee/immigrant youth with a bicultural healthy living approach.

This Summer, we have successfully adapted the Green/Park Prescription concepts through Summer Festivals and a performance of our WATER Dance Drama at the State Fair, featuring events like:

a. Summer-Long Cultural Exercise Opportunities throughout Northside. BALL has teamed up with the Minneapolis Park and Rec to offer cultural exercises, such as: Asian Dance, Zumba, and African Drum/Dance, to encourage immigrant/refugee members to take pride in exercises with their cultural heritage activities.

b. June at Open Streets. Youth performing Asian Dances and Rap/Hip Hop dances throughout the diverse Open Street events to promote cultural exercise, and green prescription concepts to bikers and area residents.

c. July at Block Parties and Greenway events. Utilizing stencil arts with diverse languages of “Exercise” on top of the arts, Northside neighbors are encouraged to come out of their houses, to walk and exercise more.

d. August at the Minnesota State Fair. BALL ended the summer fun with the spectacular Asian Dance Drama Performance – WATER. Reaching thousands of audience members, the BALL Campaign has joined many others to celebrate the National Park Service’s 100-year anniversary in August of 2016 at the Minnesota State Fair. The Mississippi River National Park in Minneapolis is one of only a handful of urban national parks. Our dance drama opened with a “WATER” theme, following a story line portraying how water in all different forms (rain, river, ocean, etc.) nurtures diverse lands in MN that many Asians call HOME (representing Dai, Miao, Yi and Thai ethnicities). The dance drama closed with a strong group ribbon dance with Asians using ribbons to portray the waving water symbolizing good health and wealth.

Our Dance Drama has drawn diverse interests for the Green/Park Prescription concepts, people picked up brochures, asked questions, but most importantly – the appreciation/conservation of WATER, and how WATER fosters harmony between humans and nature.[/vc_column_text][mk_image src=”https://ballequity.amamedia.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/CentralParkPerform1.jpg” image_width=”525″ image_height=”367″ crop=”true” svg=”false” lightbox=”true” frame_style=”simple” target=”_self” title=”AMA Dance Performance in the park!” caption_location=”inside-image” align=”left” margin_bottom=”10″][vc_column_text title=”” disable_pattern=”true” align=”left” margin_bottom=”0″ animation=”” el_class=”ball-cam”]

2. Interactive Map Update

In partnership with CURA (The Center for Urban and Regional Affairs), Asian Media Access has produced an Interactive Map for North Minneapolis to visually pinpoint areas in need of support as well as highlight resources available for the community. We are still in the process of adding more layers to this resource (we would like to also include transportation, crime, and events…), but we will make it available on the Bicultural Active Living Lifestyle website soon. It is our hope that this resource sparks a variety of conversations in our community and that it shines a light on areas of North Minneapolis which are truly in need, whatever that need may be. Please keep an eye on next months newsletter for the link to our Interactive Map!
